“What to Expect When Your Expecting” is a wonderful book for new parents, but it’s missing a chapter on mold inspection, mold removal and mold remediation.  Recent studies link exposure to mold, as early as in the womb, to the development of asthma in young children.

Prof. Tiina Reponen, lead study author and an expert in environmental health at the Ohio university proclaims “early life exposure to mold seems to play a critical role in childhood asthma development… This study should motivate expectant parents – especially if they have a family history of allergy or asthma – to reduce the mold burden in their homes,”.

University of Cincinnati researchers publish their conclusions in the August issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology that children exposed to mold before and at age 1 are three times more likely to develop asthma by age 7 than a child aged 7 years being exposed to mold.

“The symptoms of pediatric asthma range from a nagging cough that lingers for days or weeks to sudden shortness of breath and wheezing that requires emergency treatment,” says allergist Dr. David Bernstein, a study co-author. “If a young child’s symptoms persist, that’s a clue that it could be asthma.”
